Description

ILFRACOMBE

SS5247 PORTLAND STREET
853-1/7/109 (North side)
No.9
Marland

II

House. Early to mid C19. Rendered, solid walls; lower section
to right is of painted stone rubble.
MATERIALS: slated roofs, the slates on lower section behing of
asbestos; main roof has crested red ridge tiles. Red brick
chimney with 8 good pots on right-hand side wall.
PLAN: main house probably has double-depth plan.
EXTERIOR: main house is 4-storeyed with 2-window front;
2-storeyed section to right is now only 1 window wide,
although part of it appears to have been demolished to insert
a small courtyard.
Ground storey is rusticated, with raised band at sill level in
second storey. Doorway to left is round-arched with moulded
imposts, flanked by pilasters supporting an entablature with
bracketed cornice. Recessed 6-panelled door with patterned
fanlight above; ornate iron footscraper within doorway, inset
on left side.
Upper storeys retain faint traces of masonry markings; windows
have moulded architraves. Bracketed wooden eaves cornice. All
windows contain sashes, those in third and fourth storeys with
1 upright glazing bar per sash.
2-storeyed section to right has a single blind window in
ground storey, apparently infilling an earlier, wider opening.
Right-hand, stone rubble side wall, presumably a later
addition, has a late C20 garage door, with iron girder for a
lintel, in ground storey. In centre of upper storey is a
large, mid C19 round-arched window. This contains a 2-light
wooden casement with 3 panes per light; below it is a fixed,
5- pane sash and above it a transom-light with interlacing
Gothic glazing bars. To the left of this window is a much
smaller one with a fixed 4- pane sash.
INTERIOR not inspected.
