Pair of attached houses. Mid C19. Limestone ashlar, rendered
sides, ashlar ridge stacks with a pantile hip roof and leaded
dormers. Double-depth plan. Italianate style. 2 storeys,
basement and attic; 4-window range.
A symmetrical pair with pedimented projecting wings and
entrances in the sides. Deep rusticated quoins and pilaster
strip to the party wall, plinth, moulded plat band, frieze and
modillion cornice. Doorways have keys and imposts to
semicircular arches with timber fanlights, and flanking
pilasters to consoles and a cornice; 2-leaf doors with oval
panels; towards the rear are tall stained-glass stair windows;
late C19 porch with stained-glass panels.
The wings have tripartite windows with keyed semicircular
heads, larger to the middle, with consoles to a cornice that
runs into the plat band, below first-floor windows set in a
raised panel have keyed, shouldered architraves, to
plate-glass sashes; similar inner windows have 2/2-pane
sashes; timber pediments, that to the left with a C20 window
in the ashlar tympanum. Tall semicircular-arched dormers to
the front and sides with keyed architraves and side brackets.
Rusticated basement with semicircular-arched windows forms a
balcony below the wings with a pierced balustrade, and a
verandah between them. Stacks have corbelled cornices.
INTERIOR not inspected. Nos 4-14 (qv) have common plans and
interiors, and share many external details.
