Garden walls. Probably early-to-mid C19 and early-to-mid C20,
reusing some C18 stonework. Sandstone rubble. The southern
wall contains a Tudor-arched gateway with a 3-light mullioned
window to its right. A flight of stone steps to its right
leads to an upper level beyond the western wall. This western
wall extends towards the north and contains 3 niches with
statues. On the north side the garden is enclosed by a wall
which contains 3 moulded sandstone arches with keystones,
carried on 4 columns with Doric capitals. The western column
of the middle arch is buttressed. The western garden wall
extends north beyond this northern wall, where it returns
towards the west parallel with Heysham Head House (qv) and
contains a blocked doorway with moulded arched head. Above the
doorway is a niche. From the western end of this wall a wall
containing 2 blocked chamfered doorways extends northwards to
meet the south-west corner of the house. Demolition of C20
additions to the house have resulted in some late C20
rebuilding of the wall. Heysham Head House was originally
known as Heysham Lodge and was bought in 1923 by Septimus Wray
who opened the grounds to the public as Heysham Head Old
English Gardens.
