Machinery pit for lock gates No.4. c1880. By Henry W Wake. For
River Wear Commission. Ashlar-lined pit; cast-iron and
wrought-iron wheels, chains, cogs. A long rectangular pit at
right angles to and immediately west of the E swing-bridge
(qv) contains the former lock gates chains and cog wheels.
When the bridge swings open the long arm rests parallel to
this pit. Cast-iron round plate formerly covering lock gate
hinge, now in dock workshop, low relief inscription: RIVER
WEAR COMMISSION/ NO.4 LOCK GATES/ 1880/ H.W.WAKE. C.E./
ENGINEER.
