Boathouse and attached
causeway approximately
100m north-west of
Maer Hall
GV II
Boathouse. Probably mid-to-late C19. Possibly by T.H. Mawson, who laid
out the gardens of Maer Hall (q.v.) for F.J. Harrison in late C19. Rock-
faced sandstone ashlar. Causeway about 20m in length running from balustrade
and turning to left at north-west end, under which is the boathouse
itself. Causeway has one round-headed arch on both sides, with steps over
top and 2 round arches and short flight of steps on south. Boathouse with
narrow round arches to north-west and south and wide round-arched boat
entrance to north; flat roof above with low parapet has access from
causeway. The boathouse and causeway were formerly in the lake itself,
but this has now receded to the north-west, which means that boats now
have to be pulled for a short distance across the lawn.
