House, said to be originally hunting lodge, now presbytery to
Catholic church of St Thomas of Canterbury. C16 or early C17;
alterations c1866. Painted brick with timber-framed cross wing
with square framing, and tile-hung gable to kitchen wing; tile
roof and brick stack. 2-storey range has cross wing with
full-height hall to left with single-storey kitchen wing to
left end. Windows mostly casements with leaded glazing; 2
small lights to kitchen wing; hall has wooden-mullioned window
of 4 lights with 2 transoms and decorative leaded glazing; bow
window with lean-to roof to cross wing, 1st floor and attic
window above; small end windows; entrance to right return of
wing has canopy in angle and panelled door; gable-end stack
and cross-axial stack to kitchen wing. Rear similar: hall has
bay window under catslide roof with 4-lights and transom,
light to right return; gabled dormer above. Left return has
lean-to outshut; 2 small lights and gabled canopy to entrance.
INTERIOR: chamfered beams and exposed joists; entrance hall
has dado panelling; doors with C17 relief panels of figures
etc; hall has large fireplace with attached wood columns and
C17 panels, turned balusters to low gallery above, called the
minstrel's gallery; richly moulded doorcases; spiral stair to
rear of cross wing. House owned in C19 by Col. Thorneycroft of
Tettenhall Towers (q.v.), who installed C17 reliefs and other
features.
