3/159 Lock Bridge on Copthurst Lane at N.
- end, to junction with Walton Summit
GV Branch at S. end
II
Seven canal locks by which Leeds - Liverpool Canal was joined to Lancaster
Canal South End in 1816. Large gritstone blocks: wooden gates (some now
have metal push bars) with iron sluices etc. Locks do not form a single
flight, but are irregularly spaced in a total length of 1 km from Top Lock
Bridge on Copthurst Lane at the north end to the junction with Walton
Summit Branch at the south end. All are of standard form, all have
wooden footbridges at the lower end,but the entrances of Top Lock,
4th Lock and 7th Lock differ: lower entrance of Top Lock and upper entrance
of 4th lock are extended to pass under (respectively) Top Lock Bridge (q.v.)
and 4th Lock Bridge (q.v.) and the left wall at the lower entrance to
7th lock turns round the junction to form a bullnose which is crossed by
a raised stone causeway between 2 footbridges. Between the 3 lowest locks
are 2 basins. All locks in working order. (Part of Top Lock, and Top Lock
House which shares GV are in Heapey CP).
