Water Channel and Three
Bridges in Melbourne
Hall Gardens

Water channel and three bridges. Early C18 with later repairs.
Erected as part of a French style garden designed by Royal
Gardeners to Queen Anne, London and Wise, for Thomas Coke of
Melbourne Hall with work carried out by Sorocold. Stone, rubble
and ashlar. Long channel running from the pool under the Old
Mill to the Grand Basin with three bridges over. Channel has
stone rubble sides and the bridges all have low single segmental
arches. Originally none of them had parapets but that nearest
the mill has had low stone parapets added. Included in the
Derbyshire Historic Gardens Register at Grade I. Flee item 6/63
for sources.
