2 cottages. Former farmhouse. C17 farmhouse; divided into 2 or 3 cottages,
rearranged and extended in early C19. Plastered cob on stone rubble footings; cob,
stone rubble and brick stacks; slate roof, originally thatch.
2 adjoining cottages facing north-west. The original C17 farmhouse had a 2-room and
central through-passage plan with end stacks. Brook Farmhouse now occupies the
front portion of the passage and the right (south-western) room of the former
farmhouse and now has a 2-storey service extension to rear of the right end.
Brookhayes occupies the rear part of the passage and the left room. There is a 1-
room extension on the left end with an end stack and a service extension to rear of
the passage.
Irregular 5-window front overall, 3 to Brookhayes and 2 to Brook Farmhouse.
Brookhayes has C20 casements without glazing bars and there is a C20 door with
contemporary gabled and slate-roofed porch. Brook Farmhouse had C19 and C20
casements with glazing bars and has a late C19 part-glazed panelled door behind a
C20 flat-roofed aluminium-framed porch. The roof is gable-ended.
Interior. The C17 farmhouse is substantially intact, at least on the ground floor.
The right room (Brook Farmhouse) appears to be of higher status and therefore
presumably the parlour. Its crossbeam is soffit-chamfered with bar-scroll stops.
The fireplace is blocked by a C20 grate but part of its soffit-chamfered and scroll
stopped oak lintel is exposed. The winder stair to left is probably original and
the door to it is hung on H-L hinges. The left room (in Brookhayes) has a soffit-
chamfered and scroll-stopped crossbeam. The fireplace here is blocked. The read
passage door is also hung on H-L hinges. The roof is inaccessible but appears to
have been rebuilt in the C19 at a higher level than the original.
