Description

CREWKERNE

ST4409 MARKET SQUARE
876-1/7/90 (West side)
06/09/74 Nos.7, 9 AND 11

GV II

Shown on OS Map as Nos 9 and 11.
Two houses, now 2 shops and one house. c1840-50. Ham Hill
stone ashlar with a slate roof.
PLAN: double-depth plan.
EXTERIOR: classical style. 3 storeys; 5-window range. Designed
as a group, the outer bays each of 2-windows, are stepped
slightly forward, and the cornice and blocking-course follow
the contour. The second-floor has 6/6-pane sashes, the outer
ones with cills on small brackets, flanking the central one in
a moulded architrave.
To the sides, the first-floor has full-height French windows
with a continuous string-course at impost-level, forming round
arches above the windows; these have late C19 railings. The
centre, without the string-course, has one 6/6-pane ash in a
moulded pedimented architrave.
The ground-floor has banded rustication, obscured to the sides
by C20 shopfronts; the central bay has an elliptical-arched
carriage entrance to the right with a cast-iron trellissed
overlight; to the left of it is a round-arched doorway with a
semi-circular overlight of radiating glazing bars. Doors to to
both openings are C20.
The inside of the carriageway is painted brick to the left and
incised stucco to the right; integral wooden framing above a
grooved shelf with a drainage gulley and hole to the centre,
approx 1m from the ground, was probably part of the original
shop.
INTERIOR not inspected.
