House, now office. c1760, restored c1990. Stucco over brick
with limestone dressings, right-hand lateral stack and slate
roof. Double-depth plan with a central stairwell. Mid Georgian
style. 3 storeys, attic and basement; 3-window range. A
symmetrical front open to a small courtyard, with 6/6-pane
sashes, cornice and parapet.
INTERIOR: extensively restored, with panelled wainscot and
reeded dados, enriched plaster cornices, panelled shutters and
6-panel doors; marble-flagged stair hall with black stone
insets, lateral open-well stair with ramped, wreathed mahogany
rail, stick balusters with periodic wrought-iron adorsal
panels with gilded rosettes, and curtail, with a dogleg rear
attic service stair, and an oval window from the first-floor
half-landing to small side room; semicircular arches on fluted
pilasters to stair hall and landings, elliptical arches to
rear ground-floor room, which has an Adam-style plaster fire
surround and blue tiles in the hearth, a delicate fluted oval
batswing ceiling rose surrounded by running leaves to
first-floor front room, and a good marble fire surround with
insert strips, and a rocaille panel and cast-iron hob grate;
rear fire surrounds with architraves and cast-iron hob grates;
vaulted cellars with brick stores and slate shelves.
An unusually complete mid Georgian house surviving within the
city centre.
