Bank and office. 1938. By Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. Portland
ashlar, lateral stacks and pantile mansard roof. Double-depth
plan. Stripped Classical style. 5 storeys and attic; 4-window
range. A symmetrical front has a ground floor in 3 sections
with pilasters to an entablature, set forward to the centre;
3rd-floor sill band, with wide fluted piers above between the
windows, entablature and a shallow full-width pediment and
parapet. The 5th floor is set back with a coped parapet. Outer
ground-floor openings have split keys to lintels, rectangular
overlights above with lattice grilles, French windows each
side, and a wider central window, all with aluminium glazing
bars with segmental-arched tops; Art Nouveau-style grille over
the middle window. Female Epstein-style relief carvings flank
a wide central first-floor window, brackets to a balcony above
with intersecting curved railings and French windows; windows
with aluminium glazing bars, and 3 copper-clad dormers.
INTERIOR: largely remodelled late C20.
