Monument to members of the Kyle family, including Jane and Joseph Kyle. c1890. Signed on plinth APPK and ADK (Algernon Percy Prudhoe Kyle and Alexander Dobson Kyle). Sandstone and marble.
Approximately 2 metres high, square plan, on plinth and chamfered base. Angle pilasters support arches with leaf-carved spandrels and scroll brackets to prominent cornice. High acanthus leaf on studded stepped coping supports orb and cross finial. Inscribed marble panels set in arches. Commemorates on east: Jane, wife of Joseph, d.1890 aged 60; Joseph d.1897 aged 71; Gibson their son d.1930 aged 76. On north, a daughter: RW, and the two sons whose initials are signatures, d.1949, 1951 and 1953 aged 86, 84 and 95. Marble eroded on north.
HISTORY: Joseph Kyle was a builder responsible for many buildings in Barnard Castle. His son Gibson moved to Newcastle upon Tyne and became a successful builder and architect there.
