Town house. c1798. By Hill, builder, for Nathaniel Carkeet,
upholsterer. Granite ashlar basement, local freestone ashlar
above with natural slate roof over parapet pierced by 3 late
C19 or early C20 pedimented dormers; brick chimneys over gable
ends. Double-depth plan with central entrance hall between 2
front reception rooms plus deep service wing behind left-hand
side. 2 storeys over basement (blocked on left) plus attic;
symmetrical 3-window front. Central Tuscan doorcase with
slender engaged columns, moulded entablature, panelled
reveals, panelled door and original arcaded fanlight;
first-floor sill string; moulded parapet cornice and late C19
or early C20 horned 4-pane sashes under shallow segmental
arches with projecting key blocks. Original panelled basement
doors. INTERIOR: has most of its original carpentry and
plasterwork including moulded and carved ceiling cornices and
bands. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: replica iron railings with bridge
to right of entrance and granite forecourt plinth.
