27/07/73 No.53
(Formerly Listed as:
BARTON STREET
(South side)
Nos.51, 52 AND 53)
GV II
Small house in row. C18, but with early C19 front. Painted
brick, tile roof, brick stack.
2 storeys, attic and basement, 1-windowed. 2-light flat-roofed
dormer, one light leaded (as in No.52 (qv)), above 16-pane
sashes to segmental heads on stone cills. To the left a
panelled door to segmental head on 2 stone steps. Dentil
eaves, straight joint in brickwork to left, stack to right.
Parallel back range in brick and tile.
INTERIOR: the ceiling of the ground-floor room is formed from
rough timbers. A blocked stone fireplace, and steps down to
cellar (not accessible). The relationship of this building
with those on either side is not clear. The detail is similar
to No.52, to the left, at roof level, but there is a straight
joint between the properties; also the upper floor to No.53 is
now (1991) part of No.54 (qv) to the right, with which it
shares the chimney stack.
