13/134 Group of nine monuments in church-
yard south west of south aisle of
Church of St Michael

GV II*

Group of eight chest tombs and one pedestal tomb, C18 and early
C19, in one row of three and one row of six. From north east:
a) Unidentified monument, late C18 or early C19, pennant with
ashlar base and cornice, lyre ends and eroded slab sides. East
end armorial cartouche, apparently Gale and Lyte family arms.
b) Unidentified monument, mid C18, ashlar with baluster corners,
framed oval south plaque with drapery drop each side, fielded
north plaque with fielded strips each side. East end armorial
cartouche, possibly Lyte arms. Moulded base and cornice with
pulvinated frieze.
In second row, from north:
c) Unidentified monument, early C18, ashlar large scale with
moulded base and cornice, pulvinated frieze and gadrooned cap
stone. Ornate Baroque framing to oval north plaque, fielded
strips flanking and baluster angles. Fielded rectangular south
plaque with egg-and-dart border.
d) Gale monument, early C18, ashlar double chest tomb with moulded
cornice, fielded panelled angle piers, two shield plaques to
north and south and large oval plaques to east and west. North
inscription to Isaac Gale.
e) Unidentified monument, early C18, ashlar with moulded base and
cornice, pulvinated frieze, slim baluster angles and large
rococo-framed north plaque with panelled strips each side.
Lozenge east plaque.
f) Unidentified monument, mid C18, ashlar, half-sunk, with
baluster angles, and large bordered rectangular plaques each
side with floral strips flanking. Moulded cornice.
g) Unidentified monument, early C18, ashlar with moulded cornice
and most unusual heavily detailed ends in Baroque style,
curved outwards with fluting and high relief fleurons below.
Luxuriant foliate scroll border to north plaque.
h) Unidentified monument, early C18, ashlar in unusual Baroque
style, the moulded cornice has gadrooned frieze carried out
over slim angle balusters. Large rectangular framed north
plaque. Framed south plaque with high relief pair of rosettes
each side.
i) Unidentified pedestal monument, lm east of (f), mid to later
C18, ashlar, tall with egg-and-dart ornament to moulded cornice
broken forward over raised plaques to east and west. Plant
sprays to west, Yealfe arms to east. Stepped cap with
gadrooned top and ball finial.
The early to mid C18 monuments in this group are of exceptional
quality.
