GV II

Part of town wall. Originally built c1210, but some detail is
probably of early C19. Flint and rubble, stone coping, part
replaced in concrete. A length of about 26m of wall; from the
south side, the left end rises to a broken top at about 1.2m,
and dies left into an embankment; there follows a section
rising to a concrete coping at about 2m height; this is raised
by a swept stone weathered coping to a height of about 2.75m
for about 4m run, and contains a blocked pointed opening with
flush jamb stones and voussoirs. To the right, after sweep
down of coping, a section continues for about 14m to a
boundary, coped in part at about 2.3m, but thereafter uncoped
at about 2m height, and containing a further blocked pointed
arch, much of the arch standing above the wall, and the
voussoirs forming the outer edge of the structure. For about
5m at this end there is a low section of concrete or rendered
retaining wall added.
This is an important survival, as it is suggested that a wall
was probably erected at the end of the High Street burgage
plots at the time of the foundation of the New Town in 1206.
The fabric could be in part of this date, but the arched
openings appear to be of later date.
(Aston: Historic Towns in Somerset: 1977-).
