Canal cutting. 1839-1841. Engineered by Thomas Maddicks. 2
sandstone rubble walls approx 1210m long and approx 4.5m high,
running along the towpath and the offside of the canal from
c15m south-east of Albert Street Bridge to approx 50m
north-west of West Street Bridge. The walls have plain
pilasters at regular intervals, and plain stone bands above. A
short section of the offside wall south-east of West Street
Bridge has been rebuilt in concrete block. Rubblestone towpath
retaining wall with squared flagstone edging.
The Bridgwater and Taunton Canal was constructed between
1824-1827 with James Hollinsworth as engineer. In 1839-1841 it
was extended into Bridgwater by Thomas Maddicks.
