Holbrooks
II
House. c1400, altered in C18, extended in C20. Timber-framed,
plastered, roofed with handmade and machine-made red clay
tiles. Range of 3 bays aligned E-W, now facing N, but
originally forming the service cross-wing of a hall house
extending to the S, and facing E. C18 external stack at E end,
against underbuilt jetty, and small C20 lean-to to S of it.
C20 external stack at W end. C20 extension to N of middle and
E bays, small C20 lean-to to S. 2 storeys. All windows are C20
casements. C20 door in N extension.
INTERIOR: jowled posts. Longitudinal heavy joists of almost
square section jointed to the binding beams with unrefined
central tenons. The binding beam between the middle and W bays
is deeply chamfered with mitred stops; mortices and wattle
groove for former partition, and an incomplete 4-centered
doorhead in S wall, one of a former pair of service doorways
from the former hall range. Wide wood-burning hearth recessed
for a seat at each side. Edge-halved and bridled scarf in S
wallplate. Cambered tie-beams. The tie-beam between the middle
and W bays retains ont of 2 arched braces. Crownpost roof with
curved down-braces to both internal tie-beams, 2 axial braces
in middle bay. Original gablet hip at W end, visible
internally but gabled externally; the roof is complete in this
bay, and never had any axial braces. In the E bay the
collar-purlin has been replaced (axial braces missing), and an
axial beam from the former ceiling remains in situ. Despite
the modern external appearance this building retains an
unusually complete timber frame of c1400, and merits careful
conservation.
