Railway station. c1855, by Johnson of Birkenhead.
Brick; steep slate roof; 9 octagonal brick chimney stacks,
some grouped.
EXTERIOR: central gable, flanked by protruding wings, all with
stepped gables, coping and finials. Ashlar window surrounds,
moulded bands, stack caps and bases. Cusped lancet windows
with casements, grouped at gables. Various entrances with C20
doors.
Single-storey wing to right, with steep and hipped roofs; 2
plain brick stacks. Single-storey wing to left, with hipped
roof behind parapet; single octagonal stack.
Platform facade has render to parapet with coping. Some
coloured leaded lights, to buffet and station office, some
original double doors with grooved decoration. Framed
panelling with chamfer and grooved decoration to staircase.
East platform has single-storey building; single plain stack;
waiting room/office; toilet block in similar style;
corrugated-iron roof; raised glazed louvred section with
transom; ornamentation to gable parapets and carved stone
springers to platform shelters with cast-iron brackets, which
continue over footbridge to main complex.
INTERIOR: retains fireplaces, mouldings to ceilings, window
and door architraves. GWR furniture. Buffet interior has
draught screen with coloured leaded lights.
