Canal lock. c1771. By James Brindley, engineer. Brick with
stone dressings. Narrow lock with steps to lower end; double
lower and single upper timber gates; footbridge to lower end
has iron handrails and slot for tow rope, one side continued
along tow path for approx 17m, over steps to narrow ledge.
Overflow channel to side. One of a series of locks on the
Trent and Mersey Canal in Stone. The canal was important for
the town's industrial development.
