The Retreat

GV II

Small house and attached cottage, now all one dwelling. Early
C18 (dated 1719 inside); altered. Handmade red brick in
Flemish bond, with sandstone rubble plinth and stone slate
roof. Double-depth plan with small back extensions. Two
storeys, 1+2 windows, the house double-fronted. No.4 to the
right has a doorway offset to the left, with a wooden frame,
board door and one-course flat-arched head; and two 3-light
small-paned casement windows on each floor, all with
flat-arched heads and those at ground floor of gauged brick.
No.6 to the left has a similar doorway and one similar window
on each floor to the left. Ridge chimney at junction, gable
chimney to the right. INTERIOR: stone-framed fireplaces; date
1719 inscribed on one doorcase at ground floor.
