Offices and shop, contiguous with No.10 Emson Close. Late C16
and early C17 with some C19 refenestration and rear addition,
C20 refurbishment. Timber-framed and plastered, peg-tiled
roof. L shaped plan. 2 storeys and cellar.
Front W elevation: refurbished in C20 with panel fan combed
pargetting, door and windows C20. 2 window range, central
doorway with cornice hood, plain jambs, door, lower panels and
upper 2x3 glazing, adjacent bowed shop window on central
bracket, to N, plain fixed casement. First floor windows
sashes, flush framed, 3x2 panes. N elevation to Emson Close,
refurbished in C20, similar to front, gable of street range
has long rear range with projecting gabled stair tower and
large projecting early C17 shouldered red brick stack with
rebuilt C18 and C19 upper stages. Also, shallow stepped
lean-to addition to W gable to ground and first floor. Ground
floor, plain doorway with glazed metal door, one 3-light
casement window with glazing bars, 6x3 panes and fixed
casement 2x3 panes. First floor C19 sliding sash window 6x2
panes and C19 3x3 paned sash window. Stair tower has upper C19
sliding sash window 2x2 panes and lower fixed paned window. At
E end, ground floor felt roofed lean-to with fully glazed door
and overlight, adjacent mid-hung casement window 4x3 panes.
End red brick garden wall has short slated inner lean-to, wall
curves round to S elevation.
E end elevation: gable end of C17 wing jettied to S, ground
floor obscured by curved wall shaped up at N end, low C20
2-light casment window. First floor, early C20 3-light
casement window with leaded glazing. Wall plates and roof side
purlins project. S elevation: 2-bayed long jettied range,
refurbished as rest but principal bracketed joists exposed,
common joists have covering C19 fascia board. Ground floor
long C19 sliding sash window with glazing bars, 6x3 panes.
First floor C19 casement windows, one 3-light, one 2-light.
INTERIOR: framing of both units partly exposed. W earlier
range 2 bays originally jettied to street, principal binding
joist has lamb's tongue chamfered stop. Rear E wing also 2
bays, studding has internal nailed tension bracing at E end
and also blank apertures for original frieze window on E and S
walls. Halved and bridled scarf joint in wall plate. Ground
floor room has early C17 style paired bridging joists with
lamb's tongue chamfer stops. Stack on N side, ground floor
fireplace, jambs and timber lintel rebuilt in C20 but
herringbone brickwork at back original. First floor fireplace
has moulded brick surround with roll and hollow chamfers,
flattened depressed arched head. The house is typical of
late/post medieval expansion of a property on a town site.
Earlier range parallel to street, probably with shop, chamber
over. Expansion in fashionable style to the rear of the plot
with display window, stair tower and large stack heating 2
floors with fireplace to the upper chamber.
