House, now pair of attached houses. Early C19. Ashlar with
concrete tiled hipped roof. Square plan. 2 storeys with basement,
3 windows. Entrance doors are to left and right returns, up 7
stone steps; 6-fielded-panelled door in central recessed bay has
reeded case and rectangular light over with reeded surround with
paterae. No 409 has large 12-pane sashes either side of door with
three 12-pane sashes to first floor, No 410 has plate glass sash to
left and French window to right of door, with three 12-pane sashes
to first floor. Plat band at first floor is continuous to all four
facades. Front has central recessed bay with three tall semi-
circular arches to verandah, one French window up 9 steps. Wrought
iron balustrade to stone balcony and French window with margin
lights. Either side of recess one plate glass sash to ground floor
and one 12-pane sash to first floor, all are in recessed panels
with pilasters. Deep eaves on paired wooded brackets. Rear has
same facade as front without verandah and balcony; assorted sashes.
Interior of No 410 not inspected but said to contain reeded door
cases and fireplace surrounds with paterae, dado rails and high
skirting boards. No 409 has been altered and has none of these
features. Ashlar coach house to rear of No 409 has 2-storeys and
3-windows, plat band and Welsh slate hipped roof. History:
residence built as part of Spa development in Melksham c1815,
converted into 2 dwellings c1950.
