Courtyard walls with piers, balustrades, steps and sundial. 1897 by Francis
Inigo Thomas for Sir Lindsay Lindsay Hogg. Rubblestone brought to course and
ashlar. Rectangular courtyard with central sundial, the north and south walls
with entrances, the east wall with balustrading and central archway leading to
double flights of steps with balustraded retaining walls. North and south
courtyard walls are tall with moulded flat coping; they ramp up to rusticated
piers which are square on plan with cornices and swept, corniced capstones.
East wall is lower with balustraded sections either side of projecting quoined
centre; steps up to central archway with imposts and moulded hood flanked by
corbelled stone benches below swan-neck pediments. Archway leads through a
double flights of steps, the rear retaining wall having central niche with foun-
tain and basin. In the centre of the courtyard is sundial, the dial set on
stone ball which has base similar to pier capstones and plinth. Part of the
garden setting for Rotherfield Hall (q.v), the garden being listed grade II* in
the Register of Historic Parts and Gardens of Special Interest.

Stone walls surround the forecourt on the east or entrance side. Some balustrading
over. Rusticated gate piers in centre of north and south sides. 1897. Presumably
designed by Inigo Thomas.
