5/102 Showell Farmhouse

Farmhouse. Early/mid C18, possibly partly earlier. Coursed limestone rubble and
ashlar with wooden lintels; concrete plain-tile roof with ashlar stacks. 3-unit
plan extended to 4 units. 2 storeys plus attic. Irregular 5-window front has a
doorway, to left of centre, with a 4-panel door within a C19 ashlar porch with a
semi-circular keystoned archway; above it is a tripartite sash. To left are
casements of 2 and 3 lights and, to right, 2 bays with regularly-spaced C20
casements. The bay to extreme right is in ashlar and is slightly later. Gables
have parapets and stacks, and 2 further ridge stacks flank the entrance bay.
Rear has 2 small projections, raised late C20 to 2 storeys. Interior: some ogee
chamfer stops to some beams and some gabled roof dormers. Attic beam said to be
inscribed 1724. Showell was the site of a deserted village.
