Workhouse now geriatric hospital. 1839. Limestone with ashlar dressings
with a Welsh slate roof. Central block of 3 storeys, 3 bays, flanked by
lower 2-storey, 3-bay wings with pedimented l-bay pavilions to each side.
To either side a wall with gateways and a 1-storey, l-bay block beyond.
Central block: central half-glazed door with fanlight in stone surround with
consoles and cornice. Flanked by round-arched windows with margin glazing
and segmental relieving arches. 1st floor: cill band, 16-pane sashes with
flat arches. 2nd floor: casements with flat arches. Side wings: ground
floor has 3 sashes with glazing bars and stone cills. 1st floor: band;
3 narrow sashes with glazing bars to central bays, 16-pane sashes to outer
bays, all with flat arches. Pavilions: giant round-headed arch breaks
forward enclosing on ground floor 2 narrow 4-pane sashes with margin glazing
bars, stone cills, lintels and band above and on lst-floor a Diocletian
window with casement and cill band. Stone coped wall to either side with
board carriage gates. Beyond stone coped gabled blocks with round-arched
recesses. That to left has a sash with glazing bars and impost band, that
to right has C20 wooden carriage door. Central 3 bays have pyramidal roof
and end stacks. A ridge stack to wings either side.
