Monument. Late C19. Stone Celtic style crucifix with shaft tapering towards the
top. Crucifix carving on top with foiled ends to arms "S SW" on the shaft. The
cross marks the spot where Samuel Wilberforce, Bishop of Winchester and son of
William Wilberforce (the slave emancipator) was killed by a fall from his horse
when riding with Lord Granville (then Foreign Secretary) from Burford Bridge to
Holmbury on July 12, 1873. Erected by the Wilberforce family and listed for
historical interest.
