Roaring House Farmhouse
(formerly listed as Roaring House
and outbuildings adjoining)
GV II
Farmhouse. Probably C17, enlarged and altered in C18, further enlarged in C20.
Handmade red brick in random bond (etc), with some exposed timber-framing
and some knapped flint; red tile roof, brick chimneys. Rectangular single-depth
plan on north-south axis, composed of C17 2-unit element at right-hand (south)
end, with a single-unit addition to the left, and C20 addition further to the left,
plus a rear outshut to the first of these. All 2 low storeys; the earliest part to
the right, of 2 bays, has a doorway offset right of centre with a board door in a
wooden doorcase protected by a small brick and timber porch with pitched roof;
two 2-light casement windows on each floor (the 2nd at 1st floor displaced left,
over the porch), and a very large external chimney stack at the right-hand gable
with a low front wall of flint and a long tiled offset. The earlier addition (to
the left of a staggered vertical joint) has 2 similar windows at ground floor and
one above, and a chimney behind the ridge at the former left gable. (The C20
addition to this is not of special interest.) The right-hand gable wall not covered
by the chimney has exposed timber framing at 1st floor. The rear has inter alia
a full-height outshut to the end bay of the C17 portion, and exposed sill, wall-
post, wall-plate and rails in the next bay; in the centre, 2 flint panels with
brick lozenges; and some 2-light casements. Interior not inspected.
