6.10.89 Aisled farm building approx. 100 metres
south-east of Bocketts Farmhouse
GV II
Aisled farm building (of uncertain function). Perhaps C18 or earlier. Weather-
boarded timber frame on brick plinth, red tile roof. Square plan of 3 structural
bays with aisles on both sides. Single-storey; the north and south ends have wide
full-height wagon entrances; the roof is hipped over the main span, and carried
down over the aisles. Interior: timber framing of high quality; the aisle posts of
the cross-frames, which are mounted on longitudinal sills and braced to them,
have arch-bracing to tie-beams which extend outwards to carry the aisle-plates
(or purlins), these junctions further supported by vertical struts rising from the
aisle beams, which are themselves also arch-braced; and some of these frames
have carpenter's marks. The walls are close-studded, with passing braces; and
the roof is of common-rafter construction with a ridge plank. The item is not
only of special interest itself but also (although outside the farmyard) a valuable
element of an unusually complete group of farm buildings on this site.
