Lodore
GV II
House, now 2 houses. Early C18 with mid C20 division. Red-brown brick;
original and renewed pantile roof. 2 storeys, 5 bays, lobby-entry plan.
Central 4-panel door with overlight; flanking and first-floor sashes with
glazing bars in flush wood architraves with flat brick arches, the windows
to bays 4 and 5 renewed and C20 door inserted into window opening to bay 5.
String course at first-floor level which continues round the house,
dentilled eaves cornice. Central ridge stack, added stack far left. Left
return: C20 window to ground floor; doorway reduced to a window and a
blocked window to attic. Unsympathetic C20 shop attached to right not
included in the listing. Interior: entrance is onto the side of a large
fireplace with timber bressumer which heats bay 2. An inserted corner
fireplace to bay 1. Behind the stack, against the rear wall, is a fine
early C18 staircase of 3 straight flights with double vase balusters and
moulded handrail. Timber-studded partition walls and cavities flanking
stack to first floor. Bays 4 and 5 (a separate dwelling with attached shop)
not seen at resurvey. The house probably built as a large farmhouse with
storage space for equipment and grain in the attic storey and is interesting
for the survival of an early plan form and fine staircase.
