The best building in Nailsworth. Apparently circa 1672 but more likely
early C18. Ashlar. Three storeys. Five windows by 2, glazing bar sashes
(and C19 1-4-1 square bay on ground floor to right), bolection architraves
and moulded stone cills. Moulded string courses at floor levels. Balustraded
parapet with panelled dies. Hipped modern tile roof with 2 gabled dormers
and end chimneys. Large stone shell hood on carved scroll brackets, bolection
surround, pilasters with moulded panels and concrete lions' heads to plinths,
half glazed door approached by semi-circular steps. Early C19 three and 2
storey extension to rear, rear of main house altered, 4 storeys of irregular
windows, mullion-type with rebated ogee mouldings of the early C18 and
drip-moulds. Original lead rainwater heads.
Interior: retains "William and Mary" panelling, in 3 rooms, the ground
floor right hand room has shell recess over 6 panel door to right of modern
fireplace.
Left hand ground floor room has a fine Adam-style fireplace. The best
feature is the original half-spiral staircase from basement to attic,
turned balusters, one per tread with scroll end carvings and panelled
dado. Balusters continued across landings, string carved with garlands.
