5/171 Field Barn near Great Marstow Farm,
II
Barn; early C19; random rubble brought to courses, ashlar quoins
to doors; weatherboarding above doors, corrugated-iron roof. 5-bay barn, central
threshing floor, porches each side. Porch same height as barn: double boarded doors
with cambered timber lintel below eaves level: weatherboarded timber framing above,
forming gable (now corrugated-iron one side). Single slit air vent in sides of
porch: 2 rows of 3 slits in sides of barn either side porch. Gable 2 rows of 3
slits, above a pitching hole with cambered brick arch, and trefoil owl-hole cut from
single stone in apex of gable. Lean-to additions to one side missing or ruinous.
Internally stone-paved threshing floor; left by 450mm down. Walls roughly plastered,
coming off: bounding timbers in sides. Tie-beam trusses with angle struts; diamond
ridge piece. Porches originally lofted above doorhead level: joists survive one side,
missing other.
