Under High Street)
- II
Large detached dwelling in own grounds, now eight flats. Early and late C18.
Smooth rendered river frontage, painted brick elsewhere, Welsh slate hipped
roof to river block and slate to remainder, but one south facing slope in
concrete plain tile. U-shaped property, oldest section facing south into
Lower High Street. Principal front (to river), two storeys with parapet
pierced with bulls-eye plain openings, two large bows each with three windows
to each floor; plus central window over door; all these windows cross mullion
and transome with rectangular leaded panes. Pair of new panelled doors in
fluted ionic pilaster doorcase with pediment and decorated frieze. Return
bock (south), three and a half storeys, irregular fenestration, mostly new
or replacement, includes canted bay at ground floor, various casements with
transomes and one sash first floor, four C19 dormers. Six-panel door, centred.
Entrance hall (south wing) with fluted ionic pillar screen, painted early
C18 panelling, dentil frieze, and several round or elliptical openings off.
Remnant of C17 fireplace, left, and some recent modifications to take new
doors. Very fine early C19 stair in oak off left from hall, through two
storeys tightly around well; three balusters to each tread, alternatively
spiral and plain, but all tapered, swept and wreathed handrail, panelled
dado, arched stair window (north facing) with heavy ovolo bars; good modil-
lion cornice to top landing. Remnants of quarter column hall decoration in
East (main) wing.
