Railway bridge over River Calder. c1840. By George Stephenson. For the
Manchester and Leeds Railway Company. Regularly coursed rock-faced sandstone with
ashlar dressings. 3 segmental arches. Plinths with roll mould to piers. Band at
impost level. Rusticated voussoirs brought to course and expressed keystones.
Simple cornice with parapet above. Curved ramped abutments. Partly in the parish
of Halifax. The first part of the Manchester to Leeds railway was opened as far
as Sowerby Bridge in 1840; the section to Leeds was opened subsequently. Sowerby
