Former Hare Warren Wall. Part of same item as garden walls in Wilbury and Warren
Avenues.
Walls relating to one of 3 known hare warrens on the North Downs [the other 2
at Epsom and at Newlands Corner]. Late C17; thought to have been erected after
hunting rights left royal hands at about this time. Originally comprised a brick-walled
enclosure with egress holes fitted with little trap doors at intervals along
the west side; warrener's house at north-east corner [demolished 1930]. The
walls have been broken down in places to allow space for entrances to C20 houses
but on the east, west and south sides the walls remain with this exception substantially
intact. Wall of red bricks laid in Flemish bond; plinths; course of flints near
base; battered coping; pilasters at intervals. One egress hole in walls before
Nos 5, 9 and Driftwood and 2 before No 15. Wall interrrupted by 1 entrance each
to Nos 3, 5 and 7, by 2 entrances each to Nos 9, 11 and 13, by 1 entrance each
to Nos 15 and 17, by 2 to Green Gap, by 1 to Driftwood and by 2 to Wychwood.
South of Wychwood, the wall returns eastwards as the south garden wall to Wychwood
continuing eastwards into the garden of No 18 Wilbury Avenue [see Wilbury Avenue;
see also Warren Avenue].
