Description

TM 07 SW WATTISFIELD THE STREET (WEST SIDE)
3/112 No.4 Croft Cottages

GV II

Cottage, the surviving part of a row of 3. Late C17, with later alterations. Timber-framed and rendered with thatched roof; a brick lean-to addition on right containing the entrance door and a further lean-to along the rear. 2 storeys. 2 2-light old casement windows to the upper floor; one 3-light and one 2-light window to the ground floor; C20 plank door; a chimney-stack of C18/C19 brick set externally on the left side wall. Sideways-on, with a wide gable-end facing the street, the basic building appears to have been a barn, now reduced in length: the end wall at the rear was an open truss, with long arched braces to the tie beam. Ceilings and partitions all date from the late C18 or early C19: joists set on edge, roof with side purlins and a ridge, much repaired. Included for Group Value.
