THE STREET (SOUTH SIDE)
Clive Cottage
II
House. C16 and later. Timber-framed and rendered with thatched roof; a later
red brick gable at the east end. 1½ storeys; now 3-cell form, but the 3rd
unit (at the west end) is an early C19 addition. An end chimney-stack,
backing up against a brick gable, has a plain square red brick shaft; a
smaller internal stack has a similar shaft. A wide eyebrow dormer has 3 2-
light casement windows with a single horizontal bar to lights, and there are 4
similar 2-light casement windows to the ground floor; 2 narrow single-light
windows on the extreme left, and another on the right, are mid C20 insertions.
2 half-glazed doors. The 2 original bays of the interior have framing exposed
inside: studding, with some replacements, has no middle rail, arched braces at
the angles extend below the ceiling level. The truss between the 2 bays has
been cut through at tie-beam level for access above, and a later studded
partition put below. The ceiling joists in the bay adjacent to the original
stack are large, rough and widely-spaced; those in the other bay are set the
opposite way, the joists on edge with ends resting on clamps. These 2 bays
were clearly ceiled over at different times, and the interior may have been
open originally, though it is unlikely to have been an open hall. The gable
end fireplace has a plain timber lintel and a surround of Tudor brick.
