Public House, former coaching inn. Early to mid C17, extensively altered and
extended mid C19. Timber framed and plastered. Whitewashed brick ground
floor. Steeply-pitched plaintiled roof. Large 3 cells with a 2-bay kitchen
wing to rear to form a T on plan. 2 storeys and attics. Entrance in C19
gabled porch to right of centre with octagonal angle piers, segmental-headed
outer opening. Flanking cross casements with chamfered mullions and transoms,
outer bays have similar 6-light mullion and transom casements. Offset plinth,
English bond brick on ground floor, plat band to first floor with 3, 4 and 3-
light casements; all windows have hoodmoulds. Gables over each cell with 2-
light casements, wavy finialed bargeboards. Ridge stack to left of centre
rebuilt in C19 with moulded head to base, 4 separate round shafts with helical
mouldings. Gable ends have similar casements, an entrance with a segmental
pointed arched head to left. Kitchen wing extends to rear right with a
similar ridge stack with fluted shafts. To rear left a C19 whitewashed brick
addition with a shallow slate roof, stack with 4 diagonally-set shafts.
Interior. Stop-chamfered cross-axial binding beams, frame largely concealed,
double arched braces from posts to tie beams removed, cambered collars to side
purlin roof. C19 staircase with ramped handrail and turned newel post. A C20
extension to rear links to a rendered timber framed outbuilding with a
pantiled roof.
The asset was previously listed twice also at List entry 1181040. The asset was removed from the List on 27 February 2018.
