Description

TM 06 NW BADWELL ASH WYVERSTONE ROAD (OFF)

5/15 Tiptofts Farmhouse

II

Former farmhouse, now in 2 occupations. Late C16; main range and cross-wing.
Timber-framed; roughcast to cross-wing, old render with traces of comb
pargetting to main range, and some replacement brick to ground floor; old
plaintiles. 2 storeys; attics to cross-wing. c19 3-light casement windows
with glazing-bars to the upper floor, and similar larger windows with
transomes to the ground floor; plank door. The wing has a 2-light attic
window, and a small gabled dormer in the outer roof-slope. C20 half-glazed
entrance door to a small enclosed and gabled porch. Both ranges have internal
chimney-stacks with high plain red brick shafts, that to the main range very
narrow and set across the ridge of the roof. Interior of main range not
examined, but it is long and unlikely to be all of one date. The cross-wing
has a 2-cell lobby entrance form in 3 bays, including the chimney-bay. A
newel stair beside the stack. Main beams only exposed in the ground-floor
rooms, to the left of the stack with ovolo-moulding and cut-off stops, and to
the right with chamfer and scroll stops. Attics now inaccessible.
