Barn, c.1500. 12 bays. Walling up to mid-height of red brick with burnt
headers (a limited amount of diaper patterning); plinth at low level and a
course of splayed on-edge bricks at head. Upper walling timber-framed and
bricknogged with broad arched primary wind-braces to the close-studwork in
each bay. Plaintiled roof, hipped and gabletted. At bays 4 and 9 are three
original prominent gabled porches of similar construction to the main
building. C19 and C20 boarded doors; some dfoorways have been reduced in size
since C19 or earlier. In the side walls of one porch (and perhaps once in the
others) are 2-centred arched doorways of massive oak timber. In each bay are
two narrow splayed cross-windows of brick at low level. Other windows in the
brick nogging at high level may also be origina. A triangular ridge piece (a
rare feature in Suffolk in C16), and canted queen-struts rising from arch-
braced tie-beams. Lower pantiled C19 outbuildings attached to west side are
not of special interest. A large and important example, well-preserved, of an
early C16 barn, which clearly demonstrates by its individual roof carpentry
that it was built by the same carpenter as Framsden Hall.
