Description

CORSLEY TEMPLE
ST 84 SW
(south side)
10/94 The Old Dyehouse
GV II
Detached house. Early C18, altered late C18 and C19. Rubble stone
with brick dressings, half-hipped tiled roof, brick stacks. L-
plan. Two-storey, 4-window front. Gabled stone porch to left with
imposts and keystone to beaded segmental-arched opening, C19 inner
door, 3-light C20 casement to left, single casement to right, cross
wing to right has 3-light casement to ground floor and blocked
doorway, lean-to kitchen to right has 2-light segmental-headed
casement. First floor has two 3-light casements and blocked arrow
vents to left range, cross wing has single and 3-light casement
with 2-light attic casement. Left return has C20 door, 2-light
first floor casement. Rear has 6-panelled door with transom light
and 4-light casement to right, blocked arrow vents and 2-light and
4-light casements to first floor, of main range, blocked doorway to
left, cross wing has two 12-pane sashes to ground floor, 2-light
casements to first and attic floors.
Interior has C18 joinery; doors with 2 fielded panels to first
floor, cupboard below stairs with fielded panelled doors and H-L
hinges. Unusual plan with through passage away from stacks and two
staircases, one against front wall. The house may be an early C18
conversion of an industrial building to a dwelling; the range with
porch has blocked arrow vents suggesting that this part formerly
had an agricultural or industrial function. Said to have been a
dyehouse for the local woollen industry.
