Royal Arms of George III 1814, painted on a double sided, hinged, panel. The original of these Arms was painted in the time of George I (before 1801), who still laid claim to France (Fleurs de lys in the 2nd quarter). The painting in its currently restored state shows how the gold paint ran into other colours over time. In the 1st quarter, the Red lion rampant and red frame on gold (Scotland) has become a gold lion on brown. 3rd quarter, Silver harp strings (Ireland) are now gold. In the 4th quarter, the Blue lion rampant on gold with red hearts (Luneburg, part of of Hanover) is now black on brown. The modest maleness of the lion and docile unicorn suggest a major restoration of the Arms in Victorian times. (Photo Oct 2007).
