Stable block with stables, coach-houses and hayloft. c1780. By John Carr of York or John Foss of Richmond for George Hartley. Coursed sandstone with ashlar dressings, Westmorland slate roofs. Built on 3 sides of a courtyard, of one and two storeys.
Main elevation of central range (facing south-east): 3:3:3 bays. Central block of two storeys, with arcaded effect to ground floor achieved by continuous archivolt and imposts. Ashlar voussoirs to semicircular arches, the central one open forming carriageway, the outer ones with recessed blocking containing round-headed windows. First floor: three oculi in ashlar surrounds. Cornice. Hipped roof.
Outer ranges, both alike: single storey. Central round-arched doorways, recessed as windows described before, with six-panel leaved door below fanlight to left, board door below open tympanum to right; and archivolt continued as band over flanking round-arched windows. Cornice. Hipped roof to outer ends.
Rear of central block: rubble above ashlar plinth Ashlar surround to central archway. Ashlar mounting block to left. Two first floor square shuttered openings with ashlar surrounds. Inner elevation of left side range: two storey, three bay stables with ashlar plinth, sixteen-pane sash windows in ashlar surrounds flanking central round-arched ashlar surround with impost to board door below fanlight with radial glazing bars; two storey two bay coach-house with ashlar surrounds to coach archways which project slightly, with hipped roof above returning to hipped outer end of stable roofs; three bay single storey bothy with ashlar plinth; twelve-pane unequally-hung windows flanking central doorway, all in ashlar surrounds, with hipped roof to outer ends. Right side range matching.
Interior: buildings are lined with brick and have king-post roof trusses. The stables have original stalls, separated by cast-iron posts with acorn finials and with wrought-iron bars set above boarded partitions, wrought-iron mangers and enamelled basins. A straight flight of ashlar steps to the right of the entrance gateway gives access to the first floor haylofts. The fourth side of the courtyard is closed by a low rubble wall with central gate, on either side of which are semi-elliptical retaining walls for manure.
