Longhouse, C17 with alterations and extensions. Originally 1 storey
and loft; byre turned into living quarters in late C17, the whole
raised to 2-storey height, possibly in 1761 (date on right end
chimney). Taller left early C19 wing and barn extension a little
later. Older part coursed sandstone in large blocks with rough
herringbone tooling; the top six courses and the extensions more
even and smaller. Roofs, renewed in modern concrete tiles, retain
stone dressings. Central boarded through-passage door; Yorkshire
sash above. At right 3-light chamfered stone-mullioned window and
a 2-light window, missing its mullion, above; at left C20 casements.
Early C19 part 2 taller storeys, 2 bays. At right a half-glazed
door under an obliterated date panel; small single light above.
Modern casements in old openings with heavy lintels and projecting
cills. 2-storey, 1-bay further extension (said to have been used
as Quaker Meeting House) has replaced boarded door, small opening
at left and window with Y-tracery head above; also small vent holes.
Roofs have stone copings and square kneelers. Corniced chimneys at
right end and backing on to the through-passage.
Rear elevation shows small, chamfered fire window at left, then a
feeding-trough with through access, possibly dating from the early
period of agricultural use. Boarded door with remnant of small
2-light mullioned window directly above, under later Yorkshire sash.
Through-passage door and fire window to right of it, both blocked.
modern glazing in C18 opening above. The C19 part projects at
right with a Y-tracery-headed stair window above a lintel inscribed
DAIRY. Extruded pent kitchen extension. Stable door, loft door
and a small upper window in extreme right bay.
Interior: in original byre part an early C19 kitchen fireplace
partly concealing a C17 stone moulded fireplace; opening for loft
ladder alongside. Similar opening by C18 fireplace in house part,
and holes for lower loft joists. In C19 part a good staircase with
chamfered balusters and ramped handrail
