Churchyard memorial. Sculpture dated 1904 and signed by John H. M.
Furse (b.1860). Marble pedestal with bronze sculpture. Pedestal with
moulded plinth, moulded cornice, and cap with acanthus leaves at corners.
Figure of Mercury, inscribed: "I.H.M. FURSE 1904". Front of pedestal
with carved oak festoon, elephant and castle and squirrel, and inscribed:
"VIRTUTIS LAUS AG/TIO/DUM/SPIRO/SPERO". Rear with carved swag and
raven and inscribed "DEUS PASCIT CORVOS". Sides with carved wreaths.
Left-hand side inscribed "To the/dear memory of/Vincent Stewart/Corbet/
B.January 27 1890/D. At Eton College/October 17 1903". Also in memory
of Walter Orlando Corbet (d.1910) and Roland James Corbet (1915).
Vincent Corbet died of appendicitis. This is a rare example of a
sculpture. of metropolitan Post-Gilbert style in a country churchyard.
