9/105 Linhay, about 10m west of Lower
Chelmsine Farmhouse
II
Linhay, now loft over cattle stalls. Late C17-early C18, altered C19 and C2O. Rubble,
cob and weatherboardinq, thatched roof. Plan: 9-bay linhay, lying north-south, set gable
end onto road, east front facing foldyard, East front: upper storey weatherboarded,
with weatherboarding below and doorways, left return rubble, right rubble with cob above and
weatherboarding. Interior: not seen, said to contain 8 pairs of curved sling braced trusses with the rear posts
supported in the cob walls and the front posts resting on square stone blocks. The upper
ends of the trusses are connected to the principal rafters by iron pin and wedge, nailed
above with stab ties to wall plate. A rare example of the survival of this roof type in
an agricultural building. (VAG Report, unpublished SRO, January 1980).
