3/85 Cow house approx.
- 10 metres to north-
west of Middle
Farmhouse

GV II

Barn, now cow house. Probably C16 with C17 and C19 alterations and
additions. Weatherboarded timber frame of cruck construction on red
sandstone rubble plinth, partly rebuilt in C19 red sandstone rubble
and red brick; plain tile roof. 3 framed bays. North-east front:
2 openings (right-hand boarded) flanking C20 door off-centre to left;
rear with C20 window and pair of large boarded doors. Interior: 2
full cruck trusses with tie-beams, collars (one curved with cruck
blades truncated above), and yokes (Alcock apex-type L1); possible
former third cruck truss with lower parts removed and inserted C19
tie-beam with raking struts; C17 collar and tie-beam truss with queen
struts, v-struts, and square-panelled cross-wall. It has been suggested
(Alcock) that this was formerly a domestic building. The cow house
forms part of a complete farmstead group including a large barn (q.v.)
and a farmhouse (q.v.). Alcock, pp.96 and 144.
