Description

SJ 3509 WESTBURY C.P. WESTBURY

18/129 Hall Farmhouse
-

- II

Farmhouse. Circa 1800. Coursed yellow sandstone rubble with red
brick south-east (entrance) front; rendered to south-west; hipped
slate roof. Square plan. 3 storeys. Plinth, raised eaves course
and deep eaves; brick stacks off-centre to left and right. 3 bays;
segmental-headed 3-light-wooden casements with transom, 4-light
ground-floor casements; central door with 6 flush panels, rectangular
overlight, and timber porch with lattice sides, curved braces, and
hipped slate roof. One storey block set back to right with hipped
slate roof and inserted large C20 plate-glass window to front.
Interior not inspected but is said to have reused timbers in the roof.
A change in the texture of the brickwork above the first-floor
windows is possible evidence that the second floor was added soon after
the house was completed. C. Ryan, The evolution of the peasant house
in Shropshire. Medieval - c.1850. The Parish of Westbury, unpublished
thesis (October 1979), Manchester University, p. 240.
