Description

ST5412 EAST COKER CP

12/127 Little Slades
(formerly listed as one of pair
of cottages 20 yards West south
West of Slades Farmhouse)
19.4.61

GV II

Cottage. Possible C15 origins, largely rebuilt in C18. Local stone rubble, exposed timber lintel continuous over the
ground floor; thatch between coped gables, brick end chimney stacks. Single storey with attic, 3-bays. Central reeled
panel door in heavy frame; on either side rectangular leaded timber casement windows, the centre opening lights in iron
with old catches; above three C20 casements, slightly set into thatch above. Interior not seen, but reported is a
fireplace of C17 or C18 with cambered arch wood beam, a stud and panel partition, and a timber framed wall with elm
planks: four early roof trusses, probably jointed crucks, with windbracing, probably the remains of a medieval hall
house. Attached on West side is Slades Cottage (qv), with no proper division and first floor oversailing. (VAG
Reports, unpublished SRO, 1976).
